History
and Philosophy of Homeopathy
Dr.
Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann was a Physician,
Pharmacist, Chemist and practicing
GP.
He gave up the profession because
he was dissatisfied with conventional
treatment. He found that he was making
the patients suffer even more.
Samuel Hahnemann was fluent in speaking
and writing five different languages
and looked after his own family by
translating medical and pharmaceutical
writings.
He came across a Materia Medica by
a Scotsman called Dr. William Cullen,
who described a therapy for malaria
by administering Peruvian bark, which
contains quinine.
Fascinated by that
statement he took Peruvian bark himself
to see what effects it would have
on his body.
Dr. Hahnemann discovered to his surprise
that Peruvian bark caused exactly
those symptoms of malaria that the
remedy was to take away in a sick
person.
He repeated this trial
again and again on himself, family

Principles
of Homeopathy
1.
Similia Similibus Currentur
(treat like with like)
The roots of this principle go back
as far as Hippocrates (ca. 460- 377
B.C.) and Paracelsus (1493-1541). There
are also examples mentioned in the Bible.
2. Potentization (Diluted Remedies)

A few of the medicines administered
by Hahnemann were too strong in their
natural state, so he prescribed them
to patients in very small, diluted doses.
Hahnemann discovered that systematically
diluting a substance, with vigorous
shaking at each step of dilution, makes
the remedy more, not less, effective
by extracting the vital essence of the
substance.
3. Remedies
Homeopathic remedies are mainly prepared
from plant, animal and mineral extracts.
4. The Vital Force
Hahnemann discovered that the higher
the remedys dilution level, or
potency, the more effective the cure.
He reasoned that there must be a subtle
energy within the body, which responds
to the remedies, enabling the body to
heal itself.
Dr Hahnemann called this energy the
bodys vital force.
He discovered that symptoms are only
expressions of the body and not the
disease itself.
All irritations of the physical, mental
and emotional levels can result in illness,
which can also lead to symptoms on all
these levels. Exceptions are injuries
caused by accidents.
Potentized remedies help the body to
regain a balanced vital force.
